Set up the spelling test

Type 8 words and a dictation sentence. Students hear each word and build it from lowercase letter tiles. The optional “use it in a sentence” line is read between two sayings of the word, which helps with words like to, two, and too.

To use your own voice, tap 🎙 Record and say the word, a sentence, then the word again. Tap again to stop. Words you don’t record use the computer voice.

Dictation sentence

Students spell the whole sentence with letter tiles and a space tile. Capitals and punctuation aren’t scored, since the tiles are lowercase only.

If you record the sentence, read it at dictation speed. The 🐢 Slow button is hidden when your recording is used.

Teacher PIN

Locking the iPad: the PIN keeps students inside the test, but a web page can’t stop someone from leaving Safari. For a full lock, turn on Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access), then triple-click the side or home button once the test starts.
